The cost to add a map to a business website depends on whether visitors need one location, several locations, service-area context, directions, search, custom markers, or a connected directory. A simple linked map and an interactive map application should not receive the same estimate.

Define the visitor task

Decide whether the map should help someone find a location, understand coverage, compare branches, request directions, select a service area, or explore records. The task determines the provider, data, controls, and fallback.

Compare map approaches

  • Text and map link: Lower scope and often enough for one clear location.
  • Embedded provider map: More work for setup, styling, privacy, responsive behavior, and provider limits.
  • Custom location map: Highest scope for multiple records, filters, search, custom markers, directions, and a connected source.

Count locations and data

Estimate locations, service areas, hours, phone numbers, departments, markers, descriptions, categories, status, and ownership. A map cannot correct inconsistent location data on its own.

The multi-location cost guide and location page checklist cover the information architecture.

Include privacy and performance

Third-party maps can add scripts, requests, cookies, and provider terms. Estimate consent behavior, lazy loading, static fallback, keyboard access, mobile controls, and what the visitor sees if the provider fails.

Make directions and contact usable

Show the address in text, provide a copyable phone and address, label the directions action, and explain which location or department the visitor is contacting. A map should supplement essential information, not replace it.

Plan updates and testing

Test moved locations, changed hours, closed branches, duplicate markers, zoom, keyboard behavior, mobile layout, provider limits, and a blocked or unavailable map. Assign the owner for location changes.

Ask for a complete estimate

A useful proposal names the map provider, data source, locations, controls, privacy behavior, fallback, test cases, provider costs, and maintenance. Compare the customer task solved, not only the visual embed.
