Local citations are business references on directories, profiles, associations, marketplaces, and other sites. The useful goal of an audit is accurate, consistent information that helps customers and reduces confusing records.
Citations are one part of local visibility. They cannot compensate for an inaccurate profile, weak service page, or poor customer experience.
Build the citation inventory
List important directories, industry profiles, chamber or association pages, social profiles, marketplaces, data providers, and old records. Record URL, owner, login, business details, category, status, and last review.
Check core details
Compare business name, address, phone, website, hours, service area, categories, and description. Check whether the listed page still represents the business and whether the phone reaches the right team.

Find duplicates and conflicts
Identify duplicate profiles, old locations, former phone numbers, incorrect categories, copied descriptions, and listings owned by an unknown account. Prioritize records that appear prominently or send customers to the wrong place.
Claim and update responsibly
Use the business's official access process, follow each directory's verification rules, and keep a record of changes. Do not create profiles for locations or services that do not exist.
Connect citations to the site
Link to the correct homepage, location page, service page, or booking path. Check that the destination loads, carries the right information, and does not send visitors through unnecessary redirects.
Schedule maintenance
Review citations after a move, phone change, new location, rebrand, closure, or service change. Assign an owner and store evidence of the requested update.
