A content inventory makes a migration a decision process rather than a blind copy. Each page should have a purpose, owner, destination, and acceptance rule before a new site is launched.
List every public asset
Capture URL, page type, title, status, traffic, search impressions, links, forms, downloads, images, videos, feeds, structured data, language, and last update. Include pages that are not in the main navigation.
Define page disposition
Choose keep, improve, combine, redirect, archive, replace, or remove with a reason and owner. The content migration guide helps connect inventory to source and destination decisions.
Preserve search and customer intent
Record ranking queries, backlinks, internal links, conversion path, and customer question. Match a replacement to the original intent rather than redirecting every old URL to a generic homepage.
Include operational paths
Inventory forms, booking, phone, downloads, login, payments, analytics, consent, CRM, search, and notification behavior. A page is not migrated when the visible copy moved but its next action is broken.
Prepare metadata and accessibility
Carry title, description, headings, canonical, redirects, alt text, captions, language, structured data, and keyboard behavior into acceptance criteria. Review content owners and claims before publication.
Validate after launch
Test old URLs, new URLs, links, sitemap, feed, indexability, forms, analytics, mobile, and error pages. Monitor traffic, search impressions, redirects, conversions, and customer reports after the cutover.
